Friendships are like bras. Yes, I think friendships are like bras. This random thought came to me years ago and has kind of stuck in my head. I debated blogging about something as personal as a bra, but then thought, why not?
I don’t need to be so serious all of the time, right?
Anyway, back to the bras and how they are like friendships. They come in all colors, shapes and sizes; some are better to wear in certain circumstances and as far as support goes, there are many different levels. Stay with me here and think about your friendships when I reference a bra.
The comparisons are so easy…at least for me!
The Sparkly Bra or Strapless Bra: The Party/Lunch Friend
I think we all have a friend or two that would fit into this category. These are the friends that are more than acquaintances, but whom we really don’t share much of our lives with. They might know what kind of drink we like best, or what type of music we listen to, but they don’t really know much about our personal lives, and that’s totally okay.
These types of friends are fun to go out with, dancing or drinking, or to grab a quick lunch with, even if they’re not particularly supportive. We hang out with these friends mainly to be social. They’re like the bra you wear to go with that special outfit that needs a certain type of strap or flair. You can be with these friends for a few hours and feel great but, when you go your separate ways, you realize why you don’t hang out with them all of the time.
These types of friends are like bras you only wear once in a while. They serve a very specific purpose, but I wouldn’t say they are the most reliable in terms of support and comfort.
The Everyday Bra: The Tried and True Friend
These are the friends that have a permanent role in our lives, the ones we see or talk to on a regular basis who know our lives, our families and our story. They may also be sparkly bras at times, but most of the time they’re the everyday kind. These types of friends come in many colors and styles and we know that when we engage with them they’ll do their job and offer the right amount of support to get us through a normal day.
These friends don’t have to be pretty, or fancy, just dependable. These are the types of friends we have known for years and we stick with them (like a certain brand or style of bra) because we know the quality is good and we know what to expect. These friends are hard to replace because they offer a level of support that we grow accustomed to.
These friends, like the everyday bra, are the ones you can count on and I hope you have a drawer full!
The Support Bra: The “I can always count on you friend”
There are times when the pretty, sexy bra and the everyday bra might not do the job and you just need greater support. That’s when you need the support bra, the kind that holds you up and keeps you from getting hurt when you’re participating in strenuous activities. These bras are the friends who know you, really know you, and would drop anything to be there for you if you need them.
These friends know your past, they know your secrets and they know that you would be there for them no matter what as well. You have a deep connection with these friends, even if you don’t see or talk to them on an everyday basis.
These friendships are the ones that are built really well, they have a foundation of trust, and they fit so well that you know you can always count on the support they offer. The best thing about these friendships is that even though you may not “wear” them every day, you know where to find them when you need them. These bras are guaranteed to lift you up wherever and whenever you need it. You may not have a drawer full of these bras, consider yourself lucky if you do, but having a few is really all you need.
If I look through my drawers I know I will find a selection of bras and I appreciate them all. I picked them out after all. People say that variety is the spice of life and I for one think it’s great to have a selection of bras, or friends, to choose from. There are a ton of different types of bras out there and finding the one you like, the one you want to have a relationship with, isn’t as easy as it sounds.
Finding the perfect bra (or perfect friendship) takes time and patience, but the way you will look (and feel) once you have found it will be worth all the effort.
